What happens to bookings during a major disruption?

How the Major Disruptive Events Policy works for operators: what counts, how affected bookings are cancelled, and why it never counts against you.

1 min readUpdated 2 November 2026For operators

When Pickup declares a major disruptive event, such as a government directive, a declared emergency, a waterway or airspace closure, or severe weather warnings, the Major Disruptive Events Policy applies to the bookings it covers.

What it means for you

  • Affected bookings can be cancelled without the usual consequences.
  • Those cancellations cost you nothing and do not count towards your cancellation rate.
  • The policy overrides your cancellation option for the bookings it covers.
  • Guests are refunded in full.

What does not count

Ordinary traffic, foreseeable seasonal weather, or a problem with your own staff or asset. Those follow the normal Cancellation and Refund Policy.

What you should do

  1. Watch for Pickup's notice in the app. It shows the place, the dates and how many of your bookings are affected.
  2. Check which of your bookings are covered.
  3. Message affected guests in the app.
  4. Do not cancel bookings the event does not cover.

It is not insurance

The policy decides how cancellations and refunds are handled. It does not pay compensation for losses.
