What should I do if a vehicle breaks down during a trip?

Step by step: keep everyone safe, tell the guest and Pickup, send a replacement through the app, or cancel for a recognised reason.

Make everyone safe first, then tell the guest and Pickup, then choose what to do in the app.

Step by step

  1. Safety first. Stop somewhere safe. On water, follow your vessel safety procedures. Emergency? Call 112.
  2. Tell the guest what has happened and what you are doing.
  3. Open the booking and tap the help icon. Choose The car broke down (The boat has a problem, or The aircraft has a technical issue).
  4. Send a replacement. Tap Send another car (Send another boat, or Swap the aircraft). It must be the same class, size or category, or better. The guest sees it straight away. For a car, the trip time pauses until the replacement arrives and is added back at the end. See Can I send a different vehicle, vessel or aircraft?.
  5. Keep evidence: photos, times and any recovery or repair notes.

If you cannot continue the trip

If no suitable replacement is available, tap Cancel for a recognised reason. The guest gets a full refund. Add your evidence within 24 hours, such as a photo of the fault and the repair note, and it doesn't count against you. Do not take any payment outside the app to make up for it.

Preventing breakdowns

Keep up servicing and roadworthiness checks. Cars must be recertified for roadworthiness every 6 months unless new. See Roadworthiness and car servicing.

If anyone is hurt

Treat it as an incident and follow Accidents and incidents during a trip.

Need more help?

In the app, open Profile > Help. Our AI assistant answers first. Tap Talk to a person to reach the team, or email support@pickupcharter.com with your booking reference. In an emergency, call 112 first.
